Franklin Regional Medical Center Welcomes New Emergency Department Medical Director



Louisburg, N.C. – Haresh M. Kathard, M.D. has joined the Franklin Regional Medical Center medical staff as the medical director of the emergency department effective April 20.  Dr. Kathard has been practicing medicine since 1990 and he became board-certified in family medicine in 2004. In addition to completing post graduate studies in emergency care and anesthesia in South Africa, Dr. Kathard has been practicing in the United States as family practitioner and emergency care physician since 1999.   

“We are happy to have Dr. Kathard lead our emergency department team,” said Andy Bailey, assistant administrator at Franklin Regional.  “His extensive experience with emergency care will ensure our patients are receiving the most knowledgeable treatment possible when they enter Franklin Regional’s emergency department.  After participating in the interviews with administration and the medical staff, I’m confident we’ve the chosen the right leadership to oversee our emergency services.”  

Dr. Kathard has experience as an emergency department director three times in his career, including twice in South Africa and once at Down East Community Hospital in Machias, Maine.  He most recently provided emergency physician services at Lovelace Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Dr. Kathard also has current certifications in ATLS, ACLS and PALS.  Dr. Kathard has served on the faculty of Tufts University School of Medicine, as well as has been affiliated with the American Academy of Family Practitioners, American Heart Association, and the American College of Surgeons.   In addition to his background as a physician, Dr. Kathard completed his MBA at the Anderson School of Business at the University of New Mexico.  

Dr. Kathard will also serve on numerous medical staff and performance improvement committees in his role as medical director.  In addition to his medical training, Dr. Kathard also speaks many languages fluently, including Spanish.  Dr. Kathard is married with two sons and a daughter and is in the process of settling into the Franklin County service region on a permanent basis.   

“I am happy to promote the quality of services within the emergency department,” said Dr. Kathard.”  I plan to meet with members of the Franklin Regional hospital and medical staff to see how we can improve the care for their patients when they present to the emergency department”   

Dr. Kathard joins Franklin Regional within the partnership with Hospital Physician Partners (HPP) to offer emergency medical providers. HPP is a physician-led, privately held medical management company that partners with hospitals and clinical providers.  HPP is one of the fastest growing medical management companies in the United States maintaining offices in Durham, North Carolina, Jacksonville, Florida and Ft.
