Franklin Regional Medical Center’s volunteers award scholarships to high school seniors and hospital employees
Louisburg, N.C. – Franklin Regional Medical Center’s volunteer auxiliary recently awarded its 2010 scholarship winners. Three of the five scholarships were presented to hospital employees in an effort to help them further their education. This year’s recipients include: Tiffany Alston, Matthew Glen, Tayla Ricks, Deidre Taborn and Gerri Taylor.
“It is so exciting to present these scholarships every year to such deserving students,” said Andrea Williams, volunteer auxiliary director and social worker at Franklin Regional. “It is especially nice this year to be able to help our own employees advance their education, which in turn will benefit the hospital and community.”
Franklin Regional’s volunteer auxiliary has been awarding scholarships to students since 1995. The scholarship program is open to any Franklin County high school senior, Franklin Regional volunteer and/or any Franklin Regional employee. Scholarships range from $250 to $1,000. Recipients are selected according to: academic achievement, promise of future contributions to the medical profession and community and financial need.
The Franklin Regional employees who received the scholarship are: Tiffany Alston, Deidre Taborn and Gerri Taylor. Alston works in the emergency department as a unit coordinator. She has recently enrolled in college to pursue a nursing degree. Taborn has been in the medical field for 20 years and has always had the goal of becoming a nurse. She will be going back to school to pursue her goal. Taylor works full-time in the PCU at Franklin Regional. Taylor plans to receive her nursing degree in May of 2011.
The college bound high school seniors who received the scholarship are: Matthew Glen and Tayla Ricks. Glen is heavily involved in extra-curricular activities and has always dreamed of becoming a general practitioner. He will be attending NC State University in the fall to begin pursuit of his dream. Ricks also is very involved with her community and extra-curricular activities, including volunteer work at Franklin Regional. She will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall with ambitions of becoming an anesthesiologist.
